Designed to withstand the destructive forces of a category 4 cyclone and a 100 year flood while providing an architectural expression that is responsive to the ABC’s media profile was the design brief given to Brewster Murray for the latest purpose built regional radio facility.

Located in a prominent location in the city CBD the new Mackay regional radio studios accommodate a contemporary open planned and flexible workplace environment that includes state of the art studios and production suites.

Brewster Murray undertook several feasibility studies of alternative sites within the Mackay CBD before the current site was selected. After selection of the preferred site Brewster Murray’s specialist media facility designers continued with developing the concept design, obtaining development consent, preparing construction documents and providing advice during the construction phase.

As an essential community service the Mackay radio studios are required to provide a disaster recovery function consequently the building is designed as a safe haven for ABC staff and will allow continued radio broadcasts after a cyclone event.
